Tigers’ Cabrera Appears OK After Injury

The Detroit Tigers’ star third baseman Miguel Cabrera appears to have avoided major injury after being pelted in the face by a hard-hit groundball off the bat of the Phillies’ Hunter Pence during the first inning of Monday’s spring training game.

The play happened when the third baseman briefly appeared to lose track of the ball before it reached his glove, then the ball stuck him and quickly bounced away.  Cabrera was immediately sent spinning after the hit, and stood clutching his face while blood dripped onto his jersey.

Upon a second glance, the ball appeared to catch the player’s sunglasses, which ricocheted against the area below his right eye, causing a noticeable facial laceration.  After being assisted to by trainers and several players, Cabrera left the field with a towel pressed against the wound.  He was replaced at third by prospect Audy Ciriaco.

Cabrera will once again find himself manning the hot corner as a result of the team’s decision to acquire All-Star first baseman Prince Fielder during the offseason.

Tigers manager Jim Leland later told ESPN that his player seems OK, but was sent to the hospital to receive stitches and a precautionary X-ray.

**UPDATE**

The Tigers revealed that Cabrera suffered an orbital fracture under his right eye as a result of Monday’s incident.  The injury will shut him down for one week at which point he’ll be reevaluated.
